The Subject – Diesel
It is nearly a year since we lost our foundation colt Dakota Wildfire aka Diesel.. I have struggled to come to terms with the huge hole he left. My heart felt empty and our future path foggy. To say Diesel was perfection sounds like a very big statement but it would not be amiss to describe this incredible young horse in those terms.
As I write this the sadness and pain is still as acute now as it was then.
I knew that I wanted to make a tribute to him but also knew it had to be the right one. It needed to be something inspirational, that encompassed Diesel’s spirit and reach my high expectations. The piece would have to be sympathetic to his personality, my medicine hat spirit horse but also his breed as a Spanish Mustang. This challenge would take a very special artist.
A few months ago I was introduced to Katy Dunne, and she is that special artist. A sculptress, working in fine wire, weaving this cold material into pieces of pure perfection. She fills all her work with love and joy and as a result you can truly feel the passion in each sculpture as it comes to life. She understands her genre and subject impeccably. As a human who is also attached to a Spanish Mustang she also understood just how important this commission would be.
Her interpretation of Diesel is breathtaking. Capturing him flawlessly, not just physically but you also sense his personality. I will never forget him, but this piece of art will be on display for all those that visit Windchaser Ranch. I hope it will encourage questions and allow me the moment to share my memories of my funny little Indian Pony.
The Artist – In the Wired Wild Wood
Katy Dunne is an exceptional talent. She is very patient with requests and I feel very lucky to have found such a talented empathetic artist. If you are interested in her work you can find her shop on Etsy In The Wild Wood. You can also follow her on FaceBook.
History
For those of who don’t know, Diesel was Charlie’s son and would have been our foundation stallion, bred by Spanish Mustangs UK. His Dam, the beautiful Prairie Sunshine now resides in Germany at Spanish Mustangs Germany. At the beginning of May 2017, just after his 2nd birthday Diesel contracted a bacterial virus. Despite valiant efforts of both my local vet and the Veterinary clinic at the university in Bologna we were unable to save him.
